Fly Fishing on Chilko River a picture of John

Karen,

Suzanne and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tsylos. It was the highlight of 2011 for us, and ranks among our all-time best trips. I feel truly fortunate to have experienced the awesome fishing - I often look back at the pictures from the trip, and long to return to the Chilko River. The only thing that would make it better next time is lower water levels so that I could do more wading!

A Chilko River Ermine

Ermine, (Mustela eminea)

This little Ermine came to visit our front deck. It looks pretty cute, even a little cuddly.  Don’t be fooled by its size, they are bold, curious, and are quite ferocious.

Nature gives every species special gifts to protect themselves in the wilds. In this case the Ermine turns white in the winter enabling it to blend in with its snowy environment.  In the summer it turns a silky chocolate brown with a tan underbelly.

Karen and Bud Go Fishing – A Fish Tale

After spending the season listening to the “big fish stories”, and seeing everyone’s trout photos, I had to get out and go fly fishing! I decided to check out the river myself. See if these big fish tales were true. So, on one of those perfect Chilko River days, I closed up my office, gathered up my fly fishing gear, dusted it off, and headed out with Bud, my Dad.

Acoustic Tagging of Chilko Sockeye Salmon Smolt

Technology brings wonderful advances to science and one of the greatest new gadgets is Acoustic Transmitters (or tags). What makes them so great?  It allows scientist to track our fish and identify migration patterns.  It allows us to learn about our wild fish, how they travel, where they go, and more importantly what we can change in our own environment so we don’t get in the way of theirs.
